Alumni Snapshots

Our students may graduate and move on, but they remain members of The Harbour School Family. Through our annual graduate survey, we keep in touch with almost all of them and from time to time, they share with us their life stories. We are proud of our alumni and are pleased to share their stories with you.

Congratulations to Blake Moomau on winning one of the 5 national Schwallie Family Scholarships! This prestigious scholarship of $3000 for a 2-year undergraduate program is offered through the Organization of Autism Research. Blake will be attending Anne Arundel Community College in the fall pursuing studies in mass communications. Harbour Alum Recognized

Ira Thompson, who graduated in June 2006, recently received special recognition for an essay he submitted to the 2006 Maryland Distinguished Youth Disability Award selection committee. The award acknowledges young adults with disabilities who are meeting their challenges and excelling in their commitments, while successfully living their dreams.

For a young man who struggled with writing, the recognition is considered a well-earned personal victory. Elaine Verne, THS Annapolis teacher and Ira’s IEP mentor, noted that writing didn’t come easy for Ira, “it is something he had to work very hard at but, his work ethic and self-discipline are awesome.” Based on the results, Ira’s efforts have definitely paid off!

Currently Ira is enrolled as a full-time student at Delaware State University where his GPA is reportedly 3.0+. His ultimate goal is to become a pilot and if past performance is any indicator of future outcomes, we can be sure the sky is the limit!

We are proud to announce that Christopher Welsh-Charrier (Harbour School Class of 2002) graduated from Montgomery College on Friday, May 18, 2007 with an Associates of Arts degree, with Honors and a 3.5 cumulative GPA, and as a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. After being accepted to both Catholic University and American University, Chris has chosen American University. Chris stayed at AU for on year. Beginng this fall, Chris is attending the University of Maryland, College Park.
In the photograph you see Chris wearing the Phi Theta Kappa stole and the Montgomery College gold double honor cord.

Jonathan Henderson completed his bachelor's degree in December from the University of Maryland at College Park. He has entered the Montgomery County Police Internship Program.

On May 5, 2007 Zakiyyah Melise Shaw, THS class of 2000, graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in English from the Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. Zak, as she liked to be called, has a family legacy with this institution as both her mother and sister are also graduates. Harbour faculty remember her as an energetic and focused student who always gave 110%. She was also warm and kind and had an affinity for jewelry. One staff member remarked that her taste in jewelry was quite good and although the staff member offered many times, Zak wouldn’t sell her one piece.
