MIDDLE SCHOOL

Making the transition from childhood to adolescence, academically and socially is the goal of our middle school program. In the middle school, academic demands increase. Our small classes help students accept themselves, their differences and the differences of others. Providing a broad range of experiences, the middle school prepares the student for high school by learning to make informed choices, understanding the consequences of those choices and accepting responsibility for choices and behavior.
OUR STUDENTS
The middle school serves children ages 12 through 14, although older children may remain in the middle school if it is socially or academically appropriate. A wide variety of abilities are served in our individualized program, from cognitively delayed to gifted. The programs include students who are learning disabled, autistic, have other health impairments, or are multi-disabled. In each case, the child’s strengths are emphasized while needs are addressed.
OUR STAFF
The middle school team is staffed at a 3.5:1 pupil/staff ratio. A social worker or psychologist is also assigned to the team. Occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech and language therapists are also available as resources to staff, as well as to provide direct services as necessary to meet the students’ needs.
DRESS CODE, DRUGS AND MORE…
The Harbour School does have a dress code. Smoking, alcohol and drugs have no place within The Harbour School community. More specific information on the dress code and our policies on smoking, drugs, and alcohol, can be found in the student handbook. Download the student handbook here.
PREPARATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL
In the last year of middle school, students, parents and school staff make plans for a student’s high school program. Review of the students’ achievements in both academic and social endeavors aides in determining the team’s recommendation.
